About Us

The Institute of Promotional Marketing (IPM) is the UK’s leading authority on promotional marketing, shaping industry standards and championing best practices for brands, agencies, and service providers. As a key member of the CAP Committee, the self-regulatory body governing promotional marketing, we play an active role in ensuring responsible, effective, and legally compliant campaigns.

For over 90 years, we have supported businesses in navigating the evolving promotional landscape—offering expert guidance, training, legal support, and networking opportunities. Whether you’re a brand owner, agency, or service provider, the IPM is here to protect, promote, and progress your work in the industry.

Our Board

The Board of the Institute of Promotional Marketing is made up of industry leaders who help shape the future of promotional marketing. It consists of the Chairman, the immediate past-Chairman, nine elected members representing the Institute’s three business sectors (brand owners, agencies, and service providers), and up to three co-opted members.

Co-opted members are appointed to bring additional expertise in specific promotional marketing activities or channels, ensuring the Board remains at the forefront of industry developments.

Timeline

The IPM is founded as the Sales Promotion Association (SPA).

1933

The first SPA Awards are held to recognise excellence in sales promotion.

1971

The SPA is renamed as the Institute of Sales Promotion (ISP).

1990

The ISP launches the ISP Diploma, a professional qualification for the sales promotion industry.

1991

The ISP launches its Code of Conduct and Ethics, setting standards for the industry.

1993

The ISP becomes the Institute of Sales Promotion and Marketing Services (ISPMS) to reflect the expanding scope of the industry.

1997

The ISPMS becomes the Institute of Promotional Marketing (IPM).

2000

The IPM launches the IPM Diploma, a new professional qualification.

2002

The IPM introduces the COGS Awards to recognise the effectiveness of promotional marketing campaigns.

2008

The IPM launches its Membership Charter, setting out the benefits and responsibilities of membership.

2012

The IPM launches its Diversity and Inclusion Council to promote diversity and inclusion in the industry.

2020

The IPM celebrates its 90th year

2023

The IPM announces its newly appointed Board of Directors, bringing together industry leaders from across brand, agency, and service provider sectors.
